Lawyers for Child Support Matters Serving DuPage County and Surrounding Areas

If you are a parent, you know that raising a child in today's world takes effort, commitment, and love. The reality, however, is that it also takes money. While there is no way to measure how much your child's safety and happiness are worth financially, meeting your child's needs can be expensive. The experienced family law attorneys at Goostree Law Group recognize that divorced and unmarried parents often struggle with the financial aspect of raising their children. With that in mind, we offer skilled guidance and responsible representation to those involved in all types of child support matters.

A Changing Child Support Laws in Illinois

For many years, child support obligations in Illinois were calculated as a percentage of the paying parent's income. These types of calculations were straightforward, but they were seen by many as unfair to the paying parent. With the increase in two-income households over the last few decades, basing support obligations on just one party's income often failed to account for the entire situation.

In 2017, the law regarding child support in Illinois was changed dramatically. The updated law requires the court to follow a set of guidelines that takes the income of both parents into consideration. For the first time, the court can also account for the amount of parenting time that each parent has with the child. Specifically, the court is expected to utilize tables provided by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services to determine the amount of support the child should expect based on the income of both parents. That amount can then be adjusted for each parent's parenting time and divided between the parents based on their income. Additional factors include the costs of health insurance, childcare, and expenses for extracurricular activities.
